📢 Welcome to the Sports and Games Department

Welcome to the Sports and Games Department!

Sports and physical activity are essential for the holistic development of our learners. The Sports and Games Department is dedicated to promoting physical fitness, teamwork, discipline, and mental well-being through various sporting activities adapted for learners with hearing impairment.

🏆 Sports We Offer:

  • Football (Soccer) – Boys and girls teams
  • Volleyball – Inclusive and adaptive play
  • Netball – Competitive girls' team
  • Athletics – Track and field events (sprints, relays, long jump, high jump, shot put)
  • Basketball – Recreational and competitive
  • Handball – Team coordination and strategy
  • Table Tennis – Hand-eye coordination and focus
  • Cross Country – Endurance training and competition
  • Traditional Kenyan Games – Cultural sports and activities

🎯 Our Objectives:

  • To promote physical health and fitness among all learners
  • To develop teamwork, leadership, and communication skills through sports
  • To identify and nurture sporting talents for county and national competitions
  • To instill discipline, resilience, and sportsmanship in every learner
  • To provide an inclusive environment where deaf learners compete equally with hearing peers
  • To use sports as a tool for social integration and confidence building

📖 Training Methods:

Our coaches use visual demonstrations, sign language instructions, written playbooks, and practical drills to teach sports skills. We conduct daily practice sessions, weekend matches, and termly sports camps. All training is adapted to ensure safety and effective learning for deaf athletes.

🏅 Achievements:

  • County Athletics Champions – 2023, 2024
  • Regional Volleyball Tournament Winners – 2023
  • Represented Migori County in National Deaf Sports Competitions
  • Produced athletes who have competed at the National Deaf Olympics
  • Best Football Team – Special Schools Category (2022, 2023)
  • Students have earned sports scholarships to national sports academies
  • Hosted inter-school sports competitions for special schools in the region

⚠️ Challenges We Face:

  • Inadequate sports equipment (balls, nets, uniforms, starting blocks)
  • Poorly maintained sports fields and playgrounds
  • Lack of proper sports facilities (gymnasium, indoor courts, swimming pool)
  • Limited funding for travel to regional and national competitions
  • Shortage of trained sports coaches who understand deaf athletes' needs
  • Need for sports kits and proper playing shoes for all students
  • Lack of adapted sports materials (visual scoreboards, light signals for start)

🔮 Our Future Plans:

  • Construct a modern sports ground with proper drainage and lighting
  • Establish a fully equipped gymnasium for strength and conditioning
  • Introduce new sports including swimming, rugby, and martial arts
  • Partner with national sports federations to support deaf athletes
  • Organize an annual National Special Schools Sports Tournament
  • Develop a talent identification and mentorship program
  • Train all physical education teachers in advanced deaf sports coaching
  • Build changing rooms and shower facilities at the sports ground
  • Start a sports scholarship program for talented deaf athletes

📢 A Message from the HOD: "Sports have the power to break down barriers and build confidence. Our deaf athletes have proven time and again that they can compete and win against any opponent. We are nurturing future champions who will represent Kenya at the Deaflympics and other international competitions. With better facilities and equipment, our students can achieve even greater heights. I call upon the government, well-wishers, and sports organizations to support our sports program. Together, we can produce champions and use sports to transform the lives of our learners."
