Dedicated to ensuring a safe and secure environment for our learners

Security at Kuja Special School for the Deaf

Kuja Special School for the Deaf is committed to providing a safe, secure, and child-friendly learning environment for all learners, staff, and visitors. As a public mixed boarding special school in Rongo Sub-County, Migori County, the school prioritizes the protection of learners and school property through appropriate security measures.

The school has a perimeter fence with controlled entry and exit points to regulate movement into and out of the compound. Security personnel (watchmen) are deployed during both day and night to monitor the premises, safeguard school property, and ensure the safety of learners and staff.

To promote security, the school maintains:

  • A secure perimeter fence with lockable gates.
  • Security guards providing 24-hour surveillance.
  • A visitors' register at the main entrance for recording all visitors.
  • Controlled access to boarding facilities and classrooms.
  • Adequate lighting around dormitories, classrooms, offices, and walkways for improved visibility at night.
  • Fire safety equipment such as fire extinguishers placed at strategic points and inspected regularly.
  • Emergency procedures and evacuation plans for disasters such as fire or other emergencies.
  • Close collaboration with parents, the Board of Management, local administration, and nearby security agencies to enhance the safety of learners and staff.

Because many learners have hearing impairment and some have additional disabilities, safety information and emergency instructions are communicated using Kenya Sign Language, visual signs, demonstrations, and staff guidance to ensure that every learner understands emergency procedures.

The school also implements child protection measures, including supervision during learning, boarding, co-curricular activities, and movement within the school compound. Staff members are expected to uphold the Ministry of Education's child safeguarding policies and maintain a secure, respectful, and inclusive environment for all learners.

✅ Strengths (Good Aspects)

  • Secure and fenced school compound.
  • Controlled access through the main gate.
  • Security guards available throughout the day and night.
  • Safe boarding facilities under staff supervision.
  • Fire safety equipment available.
  • Good collaboration with parents and local security agencies.
  • Learner-friendly environment that supports students with hearing impairment and multiple disabilities.

⚠️ Challenges (Areas for Improvement)

  • Need for additional CCTV cameras in strategic locations.
  • Need for improved security lighting in some sections of the compound.
  • Periodic maintenance of the perimeter fence and gates.
  • Continued training of staff and learners on emergency preparedness and disaster management.
  • Acquisition of more assistive emergency communication systems (visual alarms and flashing fire alarms) suitable for learners with hearing impairment.
