Technology is a game-changer for deaf education. At Kuja Special School for the Deaf, our ICT Department is committed to bridging the digital divide and ensuring that every learner with hearing impairment gains essential digital skills that open doors to countless opportunities in the modern workforce.

What We Do:

• Teaching computer studies from Grade 1 to Grade 9, covering basic computer operations, typing, internet safety, and digital literacy.
• Integrating ICT into all academic subjects to make learning more visual, interactive, and engaging for deaf learners.
• Maintaining the school's computer laboratory, which is equipped with 25 computers, projectors, and assistive software.
• Training teachers and staff on ICT integration, e-learning platforms, and digital teaching resources.
• Providing technical support for all school events, including sound systems, projectors, and recording equipment.
• Managing the school's website, social media platforms, and digital communication channels.
• Organizing ICT clubs, coding competitions, and digital literacy workshops for students.

Our Achievements:

• Successfully integrated computer studies into the CBC curriculum for all classes.
• Trained over 90% of teachers on basic computer skills and e-learning platforms.
• Students have represented the school in county and regional ICT competitions.
• Established a functional computer laboratory with internet connectivity.
• Developed digital learning materials tailored for deaf learners (visual presentations, animated lessons, and sign language integrated content).
• Created a school website that showcases our activities and achievements to the world.
• Implemented a digital attendance and records management system for efficient school administration.

Challenges We Face:

• Inadequate computers and devices for the growing number of students (student-to-computer ratio is still high).
• Unreliable internet connectivity, which affects online learning and research.
• Lack of specialized assistive software for deaf learners, such as sign language translation tools and captioning software.
• Frequent power interruptions that disrupt lessons and damage equipment.
• Limited funding to upgrade hardware, software, and purchase new technology.
• Need for continuous teacher training as technology evolves rapidly.

Our Future Plans:

• Establish a modern ICT resource center with at least 50 computers and high-speed internet.
• Introduce coding and programming classes for interested learners.
• Develop a school e-learning platform with video lessons in Kenyan Sign Language.
• Partner with tech companies to donate assistive technology and software.
• Install solar backup systems to ensure uninterrupted power supply.
• Create a digital sign language dictionary for students and teachers.
• Organize annual ICT fairs and exhibitions to showcase student innovations.
• Train more teachers on advanced ICT skills and assistive technology.
• Establish a school radio or podcast channel for sharing information in sign language and visual formats.
